Cost per linear foot
Powder-coated aluminum railing — the entry-level system with picket or cable infill — runs roughly $120–$240 per linear foot installed in the GTA in 2026. Aluminum with tempered glass infill panels runs $200–$375 per linear foot. Frameless glass (base-shoe or standoff) runs $240–$320 per linear foot.
The overlap is real: on a mid-range aluminum-with-glass-infill project, you may be within $20–$30 per foot of a frameless glass system. At that point, the choice is aesthetic and practical, not purely financial. On the other hand, a pure powder-coat aluminum system with picket infill can be half the cost of frameless glass — a meaningful difference on a 60-foot run.

Lifespan in a Canadian climate
Tempered glass does not corrode, fade, or age. A frameless glass railing installed correctly today will look the same in 30 years, assuming the hardware is maintained. The hardware — hinges, clamps, standoffs, base-shoe channel — is the component that ages, and quality hardware is rated for 20+ years in exterior use.
Extruded aluminum with a factory powder-coat finish is rated for a structural lifespan beyond 25 years. The finish is the weaker variable: most powder-coat warranties run 10–15 years, and in Canadian conditions (freeze-thaw cycling, road-salt spray near the curb, UV exposure on south-facing decks) the finish at post bases and cut ends is the first thing to show wear. Touch-up paint or a full recoat at the 15-year mark is typical maintenance for an aluminum system.
In extremely aggressive environments — first-row lakefront, marine air exposure — quality aluminum with a marine-grade coating is still durable, but the maintenance interval is shorter. Frameless glass is genuinely low-maintenance in those environments.
Maintenance requirements
Glass requires cleaning. On a rear deck, that means wiping down the panels every few weeks during high-traffic seasons to stay ahead of fingerprints, water spots, and pollen. A squeegee and a streak-free cleaner is the main ongoing cost. The hardware needs an annual inspection — check that clamps, standoffs, and base-shoe anchors are torqued and haven’t shifted, and apply a silicone spray to hinges and pivot points if they’re sticking.
Aluminum requires less frequent visual cleaning — a dark powder-coat hides the things that show on glass — but it needs a more attentive physical inspection. The post base is the critical point. Check annually for chips in the powder-coat at and just above the base plate, clear any standing water from the base plate area before freeze-up, and touch up any bare metal with a matching spray paint. A compromised base coat leads to corrosion that works its way up the post over several winters.
View and sightline obstruction
This is where glass wins clearly. Frameless glass panels are nearly invisible from a distance. On a rear deck with a water view, a ravine, or a garden you’ve invested in, the difference between glass and aluminum pickets is the difference between seeing it and not seeing it. Glass also lets natural light through the railing plane, which matters on lower decks where the railing height is a significant portion of the wall plane.
Aluminum picket or cable-rail systems obstruct the view proportionally to post spacing and infill density. Cable rail is better than pickets for sightlines, but cables still require inspection and periodic tensioning. Aluminum-with-glass-infill eliminates most of the sightline obstruction from infill but still has aluminum posts at 4–6 foot spacing, which are visible.
Installation complexity and substrate requirements
Frameless glass systems — base-shoe especially — require a clean, level, structurally solid ledger or concrete footing with precise anchor spacing. On a well-built new deck, this is rarely a problem. On a retrofit to an older deck with irregular framing, pressure-treated lumber that has cupped or warped, or a concrete footing with limited clearance, fitting a base-shoe channel cleanly takes more preparation. We address substrate issues before templating — if the substrate needs remediation, we flag it in the quote.
Aluminum post-and-rail systems are more tolerant of substrate variation. Posts can be positioned at irregular spacing to work around framing, and the post base plate accommodates minor surface irregularities with shimming. For deck retrofits, aluminum is often the more practical choice on that basis alone.
Resale value impact
Both systems add positive resale value relative to no railing or a deteriorating wood railing. Frameless glass is perceived as a premium upgrade and is increasingly expected in the $1.5M+ GTA residential market — real estate agents in Oakville and Burlington report that it’s a listed feature in comparable sales at that price tier. Aluminum in a quality finish (matte black, bronze) is seen as a solid, current upgrade but does not carry the same premium perception as frameless glass.
If resale is the primary driver for the project, glass is the stronger investment in premium neighbourhoods. If budget and practicality are the driver, quality aluminum will not hurt resale and still represents a significant visual upgrade over wood or wrought iron.
When aluminum is the right call
- The budget is the primary constraint and the run is long (40+ feet).
- The deck has irregular framing or older substrate that doesn’t suit base-shoe glass installation.
- The home is period-style and a frameless modern glass look would read as incongruous.
- The site is a high-wind or salt-air environment where the owner prefers lower aesthetic maintenance.
- Colour-matching to existing trim is important and the specific colour isn’t achievable in glass.
When glass is the right call
- The view is the point — rear deck on a ravine, water-view property, pool surround.
- The project is in a premium neighbourhood and resale value is a consideration.
- The substrate is new construction or well-prepared for base-shoe or standoff installation.
- The design intent is contemporary or minimalist and the railing should disappear visually.
- Long-term maintenance simplicity is preferred (glass does not chip or corrode).
Hybrid systems — aluminum frame with glass infill
If neither pure aluminum nor pure frameless glass is the right fit, aluminum-frame-with-glass-infill is a legitimate middle path. You get aluminum’s structural flexibility and colour options at the post and rail level, with tempered glass panels in the infill for sightline improvement. Cost sits between the two systems — typically $200–$375 per linear foot installed. It’s a common choice on projects where the homeowner wants better sightlines than picket aluminum but the substrate doesn’t suit base-shoe glass, or where the colour-matching requirement on the frame is important.
Frequently asked questions
Is aluminum or glass more durable in Ontario winters?
Both are durable in Ontario winters when installed correctly. Tempered glass is unaffected by freeze-thaw cycling and does not corrode. Aluminum with a quality powder-coat performs well but needs annual inspection at post bases where freeze-thaw and road-salt contact can compromise the finish over time. Neither system is fragile in a Canadian climate — the question is maintenance, not durability.
Which is easier to repair if something gets damaged?
Aluminum is generally easier and cheaper to repair for localized damage. A bent picket or a chipped post can be repaired or replaced without replacing the whole run. A broken tempered glass panel needs to be replaced panel by panel, which requires re-templating and fabrication (7–14 business days). Neither system fails catastrophically, but aluminum allows for more targeted repairs.
Does glass railing require a permit in Ontario?
A building permit is required for guard installations in Ontario when building area exceeds code thresholds, when the work is part of a deck permit, or when the height of the guard falls within regulated ranges. The permit requirement applies equally to aluminum and glass systems — it’s based on the guard function, not the material. What if I want glass on one section and aluminum on another?
Mixed systems on the same property are entirely possible. Some homeowners spec frameless glass on the rear deck (view-facing) and aluminum on the front porch or side sections (where sightlines are less important and cost matters more).
