Why aluminum makes sense for some projects

Budget
A 20-linear-foot powder-coated aluminum deck railing runs roughly $2,400–$4,800 installed. The equivalent frameless glass system runs $4,800–$6,400. High-wind and lakefront environments
Fully frameless glass systems on exposed lakefront properties take a beating from wind loading. The glass itself is rated, but the point-fix or base-shoe hardware sees more flex cycles in a Lake Ontario winter than in a sheltered backyard. Aluminum posts distribute load differently and are a legitimate choice when wind exposure is high and the frameless aesthetic is not the client’s priority.
Heritage and period-style homes
On an Edwardian or Victorian home where the architecture reads traditional, modern aluminum in a heritage-appropriate colour (dark bronze, forest green, matte black) can complement the building better than a frameless glass system that reads contemporary. The choice is always the homeowner’s — we just install what fits.
Deck retrofits with challenging substrates
Frameless glass base-shoe and spigot systems need a clean, level ledger or concrete footing with specific anchor spacing. On an older pressure-treated deck with irregular framing, aluminum post-and-rail systems are more forgiving of substrate variation. We assess every job in person — if the substrate suits glass, we’ll say so; if it doesn’t, we won’t sell you a system that fails in three years.

What’s different from a glass railing
Material lifetime
Quality powder-coated aluminum has a manufacturer finish warranty of 10–15 years and a structural lifespan well beyond that. Tempered glass, by contrast, is essentially inert — it does not corrode or age. In practice, both systems outlast most renovations. The difference matters most in coastal or industrial environments where salt air or airborne particulate can eventually pit an aluminum finish; glass is immune to that.
Finish options
Aluminum wins on colour variety. Powder-coat can be matched to virtually any RAL or custom colour — if your fascia is Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron, we can spec a powder-coat to match. Anodized finishes (clear, bronze, black) are available for a more durable, architectural look. Glass, by contrast, comes in clear, low-iron (Starphire), and frosted — that’s the palette.
Maintenance profile
Aluminum railings need less frequent cleaning than glass — fingerprints and water spots show on glass in a way they don’t on a dark powder-coat. Annual inspection of the powder-coat for chips (especially at post bases where snow and ice accumulate) is recommended. Chipped powder-coat should be touched up promptly to prevent corrosion at the exposed metal. Glass needs regular cleaning to stay clear but has no finish to protect.
Cost per linear foot
Powder-coated aluminum runs $120–$240 per linear foot installed, depending on post spacing, height, infill style, and finish. Aluminum-with-glass-infill runs $200–$375 per linear foot. Frameless glass runs $240–$320 per linear foot. The overlap in the mid-range is real — on a glass-infill aluminum job, you may be within $20–$30 per foot of a base-shoe glass system. Frequently asked questions
Are aluminum railings code-compliant in Ontario?
Yes. Aluminum railings built and installed to Ontario Building Code Division B 9.8.8 are fully compliant for residential deck guards, balcony guards, and stair guards. We build to code on every job — minimum guard height (42 inches above grade for decks over 600 mm), baluster spacing, top-rail graspability, and load requirements are all verified before sign-off.
How long do aluminum railings last in Canadian winters?
Quality extruded aluminum with a factory-applied powder-coat finish is rated for 15–25 years in Canadian exterior conditions. The post base is the most vulnerable point — water, ice, and road-salt spray can accelerate corrosion if the base plate seal is compromised. We use isolation pads and proper sealant at every post base to prevent that failure mode. Annual inspection of the base area is the main maintenance task.
Can I colour-match aluminum railings to my existing trim?
In most cases, yes. Powder-coat suppliers work from RAL and Benjamin Moore / Sherwin-Williams colour codes. Bring us a paint chip or the paint code from your trim, and we can spec a powder-coat that reads as a match. An exact match is not always possible — powder-coat and paint reflect light differently — but a close match in the same colour family is achievable on most jobs.
Can aluminum railings be retrofitted to an existing deck?
Usually yes. Aluminum post-and-rail systems are more adaptable to existing framing than base-shoe glass systems. We assess the ledger, framing spacing, and decking surface at the in-home consultation. If the deck is structurally sound, retrofit is straightforward. If there are framing issues, we flag them — we won’t install a railing on a deck that can’t support it safely.
Does the 5-year warranty apply to aluminum railings the same as glass?
Yes. The 5-year written workmanship warranty covers all Lux Glass installs — glass or aluminum. It covers the work we did: hardware mounting, post setting, rail alignment, base plate sealing, and all fasteners we set into the substrate.
