What happens if a shower wall is not plumb?

The glass shows it. A frameless panel is cut square, so a wall that leans opens a tapered gap down one edge, wide at one end and tight at the other. Anything past about 1/4 inch reads as a mistake in the tile. Lux Glass measures that lean before cutting glass in the GTA.

How much can a wall be out of plumb for frameless glass?

About 1/4 inch over the height of the panel is workable with a wall channel. Between 1/4 and 1/2 inch the glass is usually scribed to follow the wall. Past 1/2 inch the wall is the cheaper thing to fix. Lux Glass reads plumb at the measure on GTA showers.

How do you fit frameless shower glass on an uneven wall?

What is a shower wall channel and when is it used?

A U-shaped metal profile fixed to the wall with the glass sitting inside it, usually about 1/2 inch deep. Because the panel can sit deeper at one end than at the other, a channel absorbs roughly 1/4 inch of lean with no visible taper. Lux Glass uses channels on out-of-plumb GTA walls.

Can frameless shower glass be scribed to a wall?

Yes. The wall profile is transferred to a template, the panel is cut to that taper, polished, and then tempered. The edge follows the wall with no channel showing. It has to be right the first time, because tempered glass cannot be recut. Lux Glass scribes panels for GTA bathrooms.

Why does a frameless shower door swing open on its own?

Because the hinge line is off plumb. A door hung on a leaning wall behaves like a ball on a slope and drifts open or closed by itself. About 1/8 inch of lean is enough to feel it. Lux Glass sets hinge lines to plumb rather than to the wall across the GTA.

Can tempered glass be trimmed to fit a crooked wall?

No. Every cut, hole and polished edge is finished before the panel enters the tempering oven, and after that it cannot be trimmed by even 1/8 inch. A panel that does not fit is remade, not adjusted. Lux Glass settles wall deviation before the order goes out in the GTA.

How is a shower wall checked for plumb?

With a level held at the bottom, the middle and the top of the opening, plus a reading taken across the opening width. Three numbers per wall show whether it leans, bows or twists, and each of those is handled differently. Lux Glass records all of them on GTA frameless showers.

Does silicone fix an out-of-plumb wall?

Only a hairline. A silicone joint is meant to seal a gap of about 3/16 inch, and a bead stretched past 1/4 inch shrinks, cracks and then holds water. Silicone is a seal, not a filler for a leaning wall. Lux Glass sizes the joint to the gap on GTA showers.

Do frameless shower hinges adjust for an out-of-plumb wall?

Barely. Most wall-mount hinges allow a small amount of movement at the fixing plate, enough for about 1/8 inch, and glass-to-glass hinges are fixed at 90 or 180 degrees. Hardware cannot correct a leaning wall. Lux Glass picks hardware after plumb is measured in Toronto and the GTA.

Should the wall be corrected before frameless glass is ordered?

If it leans more than about 1/2 inch, yes. Floating a wall straight or rebuilding a corner happens before the tile goes on, and it costs far less than a remade panel. After tile, it is the glass that has to absorb the error. Lux Glass flags it at the measure across the GTA.

Does an out-of-plumb wall change the glass thickness?

No. Thickness is set by panel size and hardware, typically 10 mm tempered for shower doors and 12 mm for large fixed panels. Glass of 5 mm or thinner is never tempered for a shower. What the wall changes is the fixing method. Lux Glass specifies both together in the GTA.

Does the curb matter as much as the wall?

Yes, because the door sits on it. A curb should pitch back into the shower by about 1/4 inch so water returns to the drain, and it has to be level end to end or the door hangs out of square. Lux Glass checks curb and wall together on GTA showers.

Can a frameless shower still be built if the wall cannot be corrected?
