Upgrading the backsplash the builder installed

Most Milton homes we work in were built between 2005 and 2020. If your kitchen still has the tile the builder put in, glass is a clean replacement: no grout lines, one continuous surface, and a colour you picked rather than one that came with the house. Milton's newer housing is consistent, which makes planning predictable, but every kitchen is still templated on site. If the countertops are being upgraded too, that changes when we measure, as explained below.

Three kinds of backsplash glass

  • Back-painted colour. The paint is on the back of the panel, so you see a solid colour through smooth glass. It is the easiest option to coordinate with cabinets.
  • Low-iron white. Ordinary glass has a green cast that turns white paint slightly minty. Low-iron glass removes most of it, so white, ivory and pale grey stay true.
  • Mirror. Reflects light and makes a smaller kitchen feel bigger, at the cost of showing more water spots and reflecting whatever is on the counter.

How a Milton backsplash job runs

  1. Site measure. We look at the wall, the outlets and switches, the range and the counters, and talk through colour and glass type.
  2. Written quote. You get a written price based on that measure before anything is ordered.
  3. Template. Once the countertops are installed and the electrical boxes are final, we template the wall exactly, including every opening.
  4. Fabrication. The glass is cut to the template, the cutouts are made, the colour is applied, and the panel behind the range is tempered.
  5. Install. Bojan sets the panels and checks every joint and opening before he leaves.

Cutouts for outlets and switches

Every outlet and switch on the backsplash wall needs its own opening in the glass. We locate each one on the template, and on tempered panels the openings are made before tempering, because tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled afterwards. If an electrician is moving or adding outlets, that work has to be finished before the template. A box moved after the glass is made will not line up with its cutout.

Pairing the glass with your cabinets

If the cabinets are staying, take the glass colour from a cabinet door held against the countertop, not from memory. If you are refacing or painting the cabinets, choose the cabinet colour first and the glass second, because the glass is easier to tune to the cabinets than the other way round. Matching exactly gives a seamless, built-in look. A deeper shade of the same colour adds depth, and a colour pulled from the countertop ties the two surfaces together.

Old Milton is a different job

The original town core west of Ontario Street, around Mill Street and Main, has heritage houses where walls are more often out of plumb and ceilings are often lower than in the subdivisions. We measure to the wall as built, plan the panel edges around what the house actually gives us, and tell you at the measure if anything needs correcting before glass can go up.

What a glass backsplash costs in Milton

Kitchen glass backsplash projects start from a $1,200 minimum job. The total depends on the length of the run, the number of panels, how many cutouts it needs, and whether you choose low-iron glass, mirror or a standard back-painted colour. The written quote lists what is included, so you can compare options before deciding.

FAQ

Milton questions, answered.

Can you quote our backsplash from photos?

Photos and a rough length help us prepare and give you a sense of scope, but glass is never cut from photos. Every Milton backsplash is measured on site, and the final template is taken once the countertops are in.

Is glass safe behind the stove?

Yes, when it is done properly. The panel behind a range or cooktop is tempered safety glass to CAN/CGSB-12.1, and the clearances follow the appliance and range hood installation instructions. We plan around your actual model, so have the model number ready.

Will our backsplash have a seam?

It depends on the length and the layout. A short straight wall can often be one panel, while a long wall or an L-shaped kitchen needs joints. We place them at corners, window edges or cabinet lines so they look planned, and all back-painted panels for one wall are made together so the colour matches.

Should we do the backsplash at the same time as new countertops?

Plan them together, but in order. Book the site measure early so the quote and the colour are settled, then we template after the new counters are installed. That way the glass follows the real countertop edge.

Mirror or colour for a smaller kitchen?

Mirror makes a small kitchen feel bigger and brighter, which is its main strength, but it also reflects clutter and shows water spots quickly. A light back-painted colour brightens the room as well, with less upkeep.

What is the easiest way to keep it clean in a busy family kitchen?

Wipe splashes as they happen with a soft cloth, warm water and mild dish soap, then dry the glass. Use a glass cleaner for fingerprints, and keep abrasive pads and steel wool away from it. Mid-tone colours hide everyday marks better than very dark colours or mirror.

Who installs the glass?

Our own crew, under owner Bojan Stojic. Lux Glass has been in business since 2008, Bojan has 18 years of experience, and he measures every job himself and oversees the installation, with no subcontractors. Every install carries a 5-year warranty on labour and 5-year warranty on hardware.
