Glass Installation in The Kingsway — Lux Glass Toronto

Glass Installation in The Kingsway — Lux Glass

The Kingsway is the western edge of established Toronto in Etobicoke: Tudor revivals, period stone-and-brick houses, mature lots and increasingly a wave of larger rebuilds on the same footprints. Most of the work we are called for here is designer-led — primary bath renovations, rear additions opening onto deep landscaped yards, and full stair retrofits where the original wood is staying and the guard is being rebuilt around it.

Frameless shower enclosures in The Kingsway

A typical Kingsway primary bath is generous. Ceilings tend to be nine feet, the shower is often a curbless walk-in inside a bigger wet zone, and the brief is to keep glass as quiet as possible against book-matched stone or large-format porcelain. We default to 3/8″ low-iron for almost everything in this neighbourhood and step up to 1/2″ only on tall single panels above eight feet, where deflection becomes a real consideration.

Designers in The Kingsway often spec a single fixed panel with a stabilizer bar back to the wall — no door, no hinge, no header — paired with a linear drain. We template once the slabs are set, cut to the actual opening, and dry-fit before final attachment. For double showers we will sometimes run two parallel fixed panels with a centre opening, again with no swinging glass, because the bathrooms are large enough not to need a contained enclosure.

Glass railings in The Kingsway

Two patterns dominate. The first is interior stair work in a period house where the original handrail and millwork are being preserved. We retrofit glass panels between existing newels with a captured channel along the existing stringer, or with a slim standoff system where the wood cannot be drilled. Either way the original handrail stays on top, and the eye reads the wood, not the glass.

The second is rear deck or pool guard work on the deeper lots. Tempered laminated glass goes into a base shoe set into the deck or pool-coping framing. We size the panels around the existing structural posts so the homeowner is not asked to redo the deck framing to fit the glass. For pool enclosures the height jumps to meet Toronto pool-fence requirements, and we will confirm latching and gap dimensions at install.

Custom mirrors and partitions in The Kingsway

Mirror work tends to be oversized — single panes that run the length of a double-vanity wall, sometimes with a back-painted strip or an LED backlight behind a tile reveal. We cut, polish and install with concealed clips so the mirror sits within a few millimetres of the tile. Kitchen pass-through partitions and home-gym mirror walls also come up regularly on larger Kingsway renovations.

Wine rooms are the other recurring partition request in this neighbourhood. The brief is usually a single full-height fixed panel separating a temperature-controlled wine room from a finished basement lounge, with a slim stainless frame and a matching glass door on a pivot hinge.

Why a recent install in The Kingsway matters

A recent install in The Kingsway showed how much site logistics drive the schedule on these jobs. The driveway is long, the front entry is protected, and large single panels have to be walked through finished space to reach a rear addition. Pre-installing protection, planning the route with the GC, and templating after every other trade is off-site is what keeps glass from being the trade that scratches a new floor.
