Garage gyms: keep the mirror clear of the slab
Converted garages are a common place for a Milton home gym, and they bring a problem a basement does not: the slab slopes. A mirror that follows the floor reads crooked against everything else in the room, so we keep the bottom edge clear of the slab and set the run level. In a lifting space that usually means a start height of 16 to 20 inches, which also keeps the glass above dropped weights and most equipment while still showing your feet in a squat. The wall behind the mirror has to be sound drywall, flat enough to bed a panel on.
Newer basements in Boyne, Cobban and Willmott
Most Milton homes we work in were built between 2005 and 2020, and the framers generally hit their dimensions cleanly. That consistency makes basement gym walls in Boyne, Bronte West, Bronte Meadows, Cobban, Walker and Willmott fairly predictable. We still check every run for flatness before mounting anything. A 6 mm panel copies whatever is under it, so a single proud drywall joint can put a visible waver across the reflection, and we fur or pack the wall where needed. In two-storey detached, semi-detached and townhome layouts, the route down to the basement still decides how large each panel can be.
Old Milton
The heritage houses west of Ontario Street around Mill Street run a different brief. Rooms are smaller, ceilings are lower and walls are more often out of plumb. A mirror there is planned to the actual condition of the wall rather than to a drawing, and a shorter run placed where the room allows often works better than trying to cover every surface.
Glass, acrylic or stick-on tiles?
Families sometimes ask whether acrylic or peel-and-stick tiles would do. Acrylic is lighter and will not shatter, which suits a room young children use, but it bows on larger panels and absorbs moisture, so the reflection warps over time. Peel-and-stick tiles are usually thin acrylic in 8-inch squares; they flex over any wall that is not dead flat and chop the reflection into a grid. Where checking form matters, we recommend 6 mm glass with safety backing.
Safety backing, polished edges and no leaning mirrors
Every gym mirror we install in Milton gets a safety backing film bonded across its full back. If a dropped plate or a bar end cracks a panel, the glass stays on the film rather than landing as loose shards underfoot. Mirror itself is annealed, not tempered, because tempering leaves a wavy distortion in the reflection; the film does the safety work. Every edge a hand can reach is flat polished, since an edge straight off the cutting table is sharp enough to open a finger. And panels are fixed to the wall, never leaned: a 75-pound sheet standing on the floor is a tip-over waiting to happen.
Gyms and studios on Steeles Avenue and Main Street East
Commercial work in Milton centres on the Steeles Avenue business parks and the Main Street East and Mountain View Road corridor. A studio or gym owner leasing a unit there usually needs insurance paperwork for the landlord: Lux Glass is WSIB insured and carries $5,000,000 Commercial General Liability. The mirror build is the same as a home gym, with the bottom edge lowered for yoga or Pilates rooms where the work happens near the floor.
Cost and the steps to an install
Gym mirrors start from $28/sqft. The final figure depends on total area, the number of panels, outlet cutouts, edge work, copper-free mirror for damp rooms and any wall preparation. The job runs in five steps: a site measure, a written quote, templating the seams and cutouts on the wall, fabrication, and installation by master glazier Bojan Stojic. Lux Glass is owner-operated with 18 years of experience, and every install carries our 5-year warranty on labour and 5-year warranty on hardware.
Milton gym mirror FAQs
Can you install a gym mirror in a converted garage?
Yes. The main detail is the sloping slab: we keep the bottom edge of the mirror clear of it and set the run level to the room. The wall behind needs to be sound drywall, and we check it for flatness before any panel goes up.
Our house is new. Do the walls still need a flatness check?
Yes. Newer Milton homes are usually framed accurately, but a single bowed stud or proud drywall joint is enough to bend the reflection on a long wall. The check happens at the site measure, and any furring or packing is priced in the written quote.
Is acrylic safer for a gym the kids also use?
Acrylic is lighter and will not shatter, so it suits a room used by children. The trade-off is optical: it bows on larger panels and absorbs moisture, so the reflection warps over time. Glass with safety backing is our recommendation wherever form matters.
What happens if a weight hits the mirror?
A hard enough knock can crack a panel. The safety backing film bonded across the back holds the pieces together, so the glass stays on the film rather than landing on the floor as loose shards. Starting the mirror 16 to 20 inches up also keeps it above most dropped weights.
Can you cut around outlets and light switches?
Yes. Outlet and switch positions are templated on the wall at the site visit, and the panels are cut with clean openings so the mirror fits flush and the run carries on past them.
How do I get a price for a Milton gym mirror?
Gym mirrors start from $28/sqft. Send the wall width and height, a note on how the room is used and a photo of the access route, then we measure on site and give you a written, itemized quote before anything is cut.
Who installs the mirror?
Master glazier Bojan Stojic installs every job himself. Lux Glass has been in business since 2008, was incorporated as Lux Glass Inc. in 2014 and does not use subcontractors.
