Gym walls
Full-wall mirror for basement, garage and studio gyms.
Lux Glass installs full-wall gym mirrors for Hamilton homeowners and studio owners, from Victorian houses in Durand and older homes in Dundas to post-war brick in Westdale, larger family homes in Ancaster and subdivisions in Stoney Creek. Hamilton is a newer corridor for us, and we say so plainly: we travel in from our Oakville base, and the work is the same 6 mm mirror with safety backing we install across the GTA.

The technical background is in our guide to mirror walls for home gyms and studios.
Century-old Victorian and Edwardian homes in Durand, Kirkendall and Dundas often have out-of-plumb walls, uneven floors and settling framing. A gym mirror shows every one of those faults, because a 6 mm panel is stiff but still copies whatever it is bedded onto. Before any panel goes up we check the run for flatness, fur or pack the wall where a bowed stud or a proud joint would bend the reflection, and set the run level rather than following a floor that has moved.
The escarpment splits Hamilton into an Upper City and a Lower City, and the housing changes with it. Westdale, west of downtown near McMaster University, is mid-century brick and post-war infill. Dundas sits under the brow of the escarpment with older housing stock. Ancaster, on top, has larger family homes and estate pockets with 2.4-metre ceilings. Durand, in the Lower City, carries Victorian houses with tighter renovation envelopes, and Stoney Creek to the east mixes suburban subdivisions with lakefront properties.
Over sound drywall, the bottom edge of the mirror sits in a J channel that carries the dead weight, and mirror mastic holds the face flat. Mirror never goes up on adhesive alone; a 75-pound panel hanging on glue is how panels come off walls. The mastic itself has to be solvent free. Ordinary construction adhesive works through the paint on the back of the mirror and attacks the silver, and the damage shows a year or two later as black edges and creeping streaks.
In a weight room the mirror usually starts 16 to 20 inches off the floor, which clears the baseboard and most equipment and keeps the bottom edge away from dropped weights while still showing your feet in a squat. Yoga and Pilates rooms go lower, because the work is near the floor. Long walls are built from several panels butted edge to edge, with flat polished meeting edges, and we set out seams and cutouts for outlets and switches on the wall before anything is cut.

Explore →Most home gyms end up in the basement, and the stair down is often the tightest point on the route. A 4 by 6 foot panel weighs around 75 pounds and a 5 by 8 closer to 125, so the stair turn and the doorways usually set the panel size. Basements are also damp. Copper-free mirror, which carries a passivation layer in place of copper, holds up better at the edges where humidity and sweat would otherwise get in.
For studio and gym owners fitting out commercial space downtown or in Ancaster, Lux Glass provides the insurance paperwork a landlord asks for: we are WSIB insured and carry $5,000,000 Commercial General Liability. The build is the same as a home gym, with the height set to the classes, and installation can be planned around your schedule.
Gym mirrors start from $28/sqft. The written quote, given after a site measure, follows the area, the number of panels, cutouts, edge work, copper-free glass and any wall preparation the flatness check finds. Lux Glass is owner-operated. Master glazier Bojan Stojic has 18 years of experience, in business since 2008, and measures and oversees every Hamilton job himself, with no subcontractors. Every install carries our 5-year warranty on labour and 5-year warranty on hardware.
Send the wall width and height, tell us whether it is a weight room, a yoga room or a studio, and include a photo of the stair or entrance. Yes. Hamilton is on our service route from our Oakville base, and we measure, quote and install across the city, from Westdale and Dundas to Ancaster, Durand and Stoney Creek.
Yes, but the wall has to be dealt with first. We check the run for flatness and fur or pack it where needed, because a 6 mm panel copies whatever is behind it and an uneven wall shows as a waver in the reflection.
In a gym a leaning mirror is a tip-over risk. A 75-pound sheet standing on the floor can come down if a barbell or a skipping rope catches it. A mirror that must stand needs an anti-tip anchor into the wall, which is why we fix gym panels to the wall.
Not for a long wall. Thinner glass flexes across a long span and bends the reflection, so 4 mm reads wavy as soon as someone walks past. Lux Glass supplies 6 mm mirror for gym and studio walls.
It is a good idea wherever there is moisture. Copper-free mirror carries a passivation layer instead of a copper one, so its edges hold up better against the humidity and sweat a basement gym sees.
Flat polished, on any edge a hand can reach. An edge straight off the cutting table is sharp enough to open a finger, so the ends of the run, the top edge and any return are ground and polished smooth.
No. Lux Glass is owner-operated and our own crew installs the work under master glazier Bojan Stojic. Every install carries our 5-year warranty on labour and 5-year warranty on hardware.
