Acid-Etched vs Sandblasted Privacy Glass – Which Is Better?
Both processes create a frosted, translucent surface that blurs visibility while letting light through. Acid-etched glass uses hydrofluoric acid to chemically etch the surface, producing a fine, smooth, uniform finish that resists fingerprints and cleans easily. Sandblasted glass uses high-pressure abrasive media to mechanically pit the surface – slightly rougher feel, more textured look, can be selectively masked for patterns. Acid-etched is the go-to for full panels in commercial and residential office work because it stays clean. Sandblasted is the go-to for custom artwork and logos because the depth can be varied. Below is how to choose.
How does each one feel to the touch?
Acid-etched feels smooth – almost silky. Light surface texture you’d describe as “matte but smooth.” Sandblasted feels gritty or sandy depending on the depth and media. The gritty surface holds dust and oils slightly more than acid-etched.
Which resists fingerprints better?
Acid-etched, by a meaningful margin. Sandblasted glass shows fingerprints, water marks, and skin oils more readily because the rougher surface holds onto them. For door pulls or push-plates, acid-etched is the practical choice.
Which gives more privacy?
Both can be specified for varying levels of privacy. Acid-etched comes in grades (light, medium, full satin) where heavier acid creates more opacity. Sandblasted is controlled by media grit and exposure time. Full opacity is achievable in both. Light-passing privacy (you can see shapes and light through it but no detail) is similar across both processes.
Which is more durable?
Acid-etched is slightly more durable in everyday use because the surface is finer and smoother – less chance of catching, chipping, or wearing visibly. Sandblasted edges can chip if hit, exposing clear glass underneath in a small spot. Both are durable enough for normal use.
How does cost compare?
For a full panel, acid-etched and sandblasted are roughly comparable, with acid-etched usually 10-20% more for the same surface area. Custom sandblasted designs (logos, patterns, gradients) cost more in labour but the per-square-foot of the base glass is similar.
Which works better for logos and patterns?
Sandblasted, by a wide margin. The mask-and-blast process lets us create sharp pattern edges and even vary depth across an image. Acid-etched can produce simple patterns through controlled masking but doesn’t have the depth variation sandblasting offers.
Which is more environmentally friendly?
Sandblasted has the edge here – it’s a mechanical process with no chemical waste. Acid-etched produces hydrofluoric acid byproducts that have to be carefully managed at the etching shop. Both are produced offsite at specialized facilities; we don’t do either in our shop.
Can either one be cleaned with regular glass cleaner?
Yes – neither is damaged by typical glass cleaners. The textured surface of sandblasted holds residue more, so you may want to wipe more thoroughly. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on either; though both are tougher than the silver backing on a mirror, you don’t want to dull a polished section adjacent to the etched area.
What if I want a partial-frost design – clear band at eye level, frosted top and bottom?
This is one of our most common requests for office partitions. Both acid-etched and sandblasted can do this with masking. The transition line will look slightly different – acid-etched has a sharper, cleaner boundary; sandblasted has a softer one. Worth seeing samples of both.
