Mirrors for Hamilton's older walls

The escarpment splits Hamilton into the Lower City and the Upper City, and the housing changes with it. The Lower City core around Durand is Victorian, Dundas is a heritage village under the escarpment brow, and Westdale, next to McMaster University, is mid-century brick and post-war infill. That matters more for a mirror than for almost anything else in a bathroom, because a mirror shows every bow and dip in the wall behind it. Most of the planning on a Hamilton mirror goes into the wall before any glass is cut.

Setting a mirror on an uneven wall

On an older Hamilton wall we work in this order:

1. Check the surface. A straightedge goes across the whole area the mirror will cover, and the high and low spots are marked.
2. Correct it. Low spots are packed or shimmed so the mirror bears on a flat plane. On a badly bowed wall, furring it out can be the cleaner fix.
3. Decide how the piece meets the room. If the corners or the ceiling line are off, we agree with you whether the mirror follows the wall or reads true, and template it that way.
4. Carry the weight properly. A bottom channel or clips take the load and solvent-free mirror mastic holds the face. Old plaster is never asked to hold a mirror on adhesive alone.

Ancaster sits on top of the escarpment with larger family homes and estate pockets, while Stoney Creek in the east end mixes suburban subdivisions with lakefront properties. In homes like these a basement gym is a natural fit, and a mirror wall is what makes it work for checking form. A long wall is built from several panels butted with tight seams, and each panel is sized to pass the basement stair turn. The bottom edge is set high enough to clear the baseboard and dropped weights while still showing your feet. Exposed edges are flat polished so nothing catches a hand.

Edges and cutouts in a heritage bathroom

Smaller original bathrooms in Durand and Dundas leave little room around the fixtures. Cutouts let a mirror pass around an outlet, a switch, or a sconce instead of stopping short of it, and every opening is located from the template taken on site. For the edge, a bevel often suits Victorian and Edwardian trim, while a flat polished edge suits a full modern renovation. In a tight room, one clean piece running wall to wall also makes the space read larger.
