Commercial Storefront Glass in Hamilton

Lux Glass installs commercial storefront glass in Hamilton for ground-floor retail, restaurants and commercial tenants, from downtown and the Lower City to Ancaster, Dundas, Westdale and Stoney Creek. We supply and fit glass frontages, entrance doors and vestibules, and we replace broken storefront panels. Lux Glass is owner-operated from Oakville by master glazier Bojan Stojic, who installs the work himself. This page is the Hamilton side of our commercial storefront glass service.

Aluminum-framed glass vestibule with transom and door closer by Lux Glass, entrance glass for Hamilton businesses

Hamilton is a newer route for us

We want to be straight about this: Hamilton is a newer part of our service area. We travel from our Oakville base, and we are building our Hamilton calendar one job at a time. The craft is not new. Lux Glass has 18 years of experience, in business since 2008 and incorporated as Lux Glass Inc. in 2014, and the person who measures your storefront is the person who installs it. If you want the glazier on the phone to be the one on site, we would like to quote your frontage.

What we install for Hamilton businesses

  • Storefront systems: flush-glazed aluminum framing with thermal breaks, for ground-floor retail and restaurants.
  • Glass entrance doors: swing or pivot doors with commercial closers, locks and pulls.
  • Vestibules: a framed glass entry with a second set of doors, to hold heat in and keep wind off the sales floor.
  • Replacement panels: cracked or broken panes replaced with matching tempered, laminated or insulated glass.

Lower City, Upper City

The Escarpment splits Hamilton into a Lower City and an Upper City, and for glass that split matters more than a postal code. We quote commercial fit-outs downtown and in Ancaster, and ground-floor retail across the city. Below the brow, Durand is the Victorian-heritage district just south of the downtown grid. Westdale sits west of downtown beside McMaster University, and Dundas is the valley town at the head of the harbour. Ancaster sits on top of the escarpment. To the east, Stoney Creek runs from suburban streets down to the Lake Ontario shore.

Older buildings and openings that are not square

Much of Hamilton’s older stock is in Durand and Dundas, and older buildings rarely have perfectly square openings. A storefront panel cut to a drawing rather than to the real opening can leave gaps or put stress on the glass. We measure every opening as it is, check it for square and level, and template the glass to suit. If the frame itself has moved, we tell you at the site measure and price that work separately, rather than forcing new glass into a frame that will not hold it.

Wind on the escarpment and by the lake

Exposure changes the glass. Ancaster sits on top of the escarpment and Stoney Creek’s lakefront faces Lake Ontario, and both bring a wind-load conversation that a sheltered downtown block may not need. Where wind loading matters on large panels, we specify laminated glass. Engineer-stamped drawings are available upon request for an additional fee, for a landlord or the City of Hamilton when they ask for them.

Tempered or laminated when a pane breaks

A broken storefront pane is a chance to choose the glass again. Tempered safety glass to CAN/CGSB-12.1 breaks into small blunt pieces and leaves the opening empty. Laminated glass cracks but holds together on its interlayer, so the store stays closed until the panel is replaced. For a display window on a busy street, laminated is worth considering. We check whether the existing frame can take the thicker glass before we recommend it.

Landlords, insurance and after-hours installs

Commercial landlords and property managers want to know who is working on their building. Lux Glass is WSIB insured and carries $5,000,000 Commercial General Liability (CGL) insurance, and we provide the certificates before work begins. We coordinate access and timing with the landlord, and installation can be booked for an evening or a weekend so the store can keep trading. Check with your landlord and the City of Hamilton about approvals for any change to the frontage before glass is ordered.

The quote comes after the measure

Storefront glass is quoted in writing after a site measure, never as a phone estimate. The order is site measure, written quote, template, fabrication, installation. The quote lists glass type, framing, doors, hardware and any after-hours or staged work as separate lines. Panel size and count, laminated or insulated glass, door hardware and any engineering are what move the price.

Hamilton storefront FAQs

Do you really work in Hamilton, or mainly in Oakville and Burlington?

We work in Hamilton. It is a newer part of our service area, and we travel from Oakville for site measures and installations across the city, from Dundas and Westdale to Stoney Creek.

Our building is old and the storefront opening is out of square. Can new glass still fit?

Usually, yes. We measure the opening as it is and template each panel to the real shape. If the frame is too distorted to hold new glass safely, we tell you at the site measure and quote the frame work separately.

Should a downtown Hamilton shop use laminated glass?

For display windows facing the street, laminated is worth considering because it stays in the frame when struck. Tempered glass is still the standard for many doors and sidelights. We recommend the glass panel by panel after the site measure.

What do you need from our landlord before starting?

Approval of the scope, any building rules for contractors, and access arrangements. We send the landlord our WSIB and $5,000,000 Commercial General Liability (CGL) certificates. If drawings are needed, engineer-stamped drawings are available upon request for an additional fee.

Can the installation happen when the store is closed?

Yes. Evening and weekend installation can be arranged so customers do not walk past an open frontage. We agree the time with you and the landlord before the glass is fabricated.

Who puts the decals and lettering on the new glass?

Usually your sign company, after we finish. Clear doors and full-height panels need a manifestation band or graphic at eye level so people see the glass, and it can carry your logo. We plan the panel layout so frame lines do not cut through the sign area.

What warranty comes with a Hamilton storefront install?

The same as everywhere we work: a 5-year warranty on labour and 5-year warranty on hardware.
