If you’re planning to install glass railings in Ontario, understanding the Building Code requirements is essential. Whether you’re a homeowner in Oakville upgrading your deck or a contractor working on a commercial project in the GTA, here’s what you need to know for 2026.
Guard Height Requirements
The Ontario Building Code (OBC) specifies minimum guard heights based on location:
Residential (Part 9): Guards must be at least 900mm (35.4 inches) high for interior locations where the drop is less than 600mm. For exterior decks, balconies, and stairs where the drop exceeds 600mm, guards must be at least 1,070mm (42 inches) high.
Commercial (Part 3): Guards must be at least 1,070mm (42 inches) high in all locations.
Glass Requirements
All glass used in guard applications must be tempered safety glass meeting CSA A440 standards, or laminated safety glass. Regular annealed glass is never permitted in railing or guard applications. Minimum thickness is typically 10mm for framed systems and 12mm for frameless systems.
Load and Impact Requirements
Glass guards must withstand specific loads: a concentrated load of 1.0 kN applied to the top of the guard, and a uniform load of 0.75 kN/m along the top rail. These requirements ensure the guard can resist a person leaning against or falling into it.
Opening and Spacing Requirements
No openings in the guard should allow passage of a 100mm (4-inch) sphere. This is particularly important for designs that combine glass panels with posts or other elements — the gaps between panels must not exceed this limit.
