Acid-etched frosted glass shower enclosure completed for a master bathroom in Milton

This acid-etched frosted glass shower enclosure was completed for a master bathroom in Milton. The etched glass gives the shower full privacy while still letting bright natural light pass through and spread across the room. Like every Lux Glass enclosure, it was custom fabricated to the opening and fitted with premium solid hardware.

Why choose acid-etched glass for a shower

Clear glass is the most common choice for a frameless shower, and it is the standard glass Lux Glass supplies. It makes a bathroom look larger and shows off the tile. In a master ensuite that shares a sightline with the bedroom, or in a bathroom with a window that faces the street, clear glass can feel too open. Acid-etched glass solves that without closing the room in.

The etching is done on the surface of the glass, which turns it a soft, even white. Shapes behind it become a blur, but daylight still comes through. A shower that would need a curtain or a solid wall with clear glass can stay bright and open with an etched panel. It also keeps the clean, minimal look of a frameless enclosure, because there is no frame, film or pattern to break up the glass.

Privacy and light in the same panel

The main thing people notice in a frosted enclosure is how the light changes. Sunlight from a window or a skylight hits the etched surface and spreads out, so the inside of the shower is evenly lit instead of having one bright patch and dark corners. In the evening, ceiling lights inside or outside the shower glow through the glass in the same soft way.

Etched glass does not have to be all or nothing. Some homeowners frost only the panel that faces the door or the toilet and keep the door clear. Others keep the whole enclosure etched for a calm, uniform look. Clear and etched glass can also be combined with other finishes, such as low-iron glass for a whiter, more neutral clear panel, or tinted glass in smoke grey or warm bronze. You can see how Lux Glass approaches low-iron glass on the Starphire low-iron glass page.

Built to the opening, not to a catalogue size

A frameless enclosure only looks right when the glass fits the room exactly. Walls are rarely perfectly plumb, floors slope toward the drain, and tile thickness changes from one bathroom to the next. That is why Lux Glass measures every opening on site before any glass is ordered. The panels are then made to those measurements, so the gaps are even, the door swings cleanly and the hardware sits where it should.

Shower glass is tempered safety glass to CAN/CGSB-12.1, usually 10mm or 12mm thick. Thicker glass feels more solid when the door opens and closes, and it suits taller or wider panels. Hinges are solid forged brass, which holds up to daily use and humid conditions far better than lighter hardware.

Caring for frosted shower glass

Etched glass is easy to live with, but it is worth knowing how it behaves. Because the surface is textured, oily fingerprints and soap can show as darker marks until they are wiped away. A soft cloth, warm water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner are enough for regular care. Avoid scouring pads and harsh powders, which can mark the surface.

A squeegee after each shower keeps water from drying on the glass, and good ventilation in the bathroom helps the whole room stay fresh. If your water is hard, wiping the glass more often stops mineral spots from building up.
