Backlit and LED Mirrors: What to Know Before You Order

A lit mirror is two orders in one: the glass, and the power behind it. Backlighting throws a halo onto the wall, front lighting comes through the face, and both decide the wiring, the thickness and the fixing before anything is cut. Here is what to settle before ordering.

What is a backlit mirror?

Light behind the glass. A low voltage LED strip is bonded to the rear of the mirror and aimed at the wall, so the glass reads as if it floats inside a soft halo. Lux Glass builds backlit mirror to size across the GTA, usually in 5 mm or 6 mm.

How is a backlit mirror different from a front-lit one?

A front-lit mirror throws light at you, not at the wall. A band of the silvering is sandblasted off the back, usually around 2 inches wide, so the LED behind shines through the glass as a frosted strip. Lux Glass makes both, and a vanity usually wants the front-lit version.

Does an LED mirror need wiring in the wall?

Yes, and that is the part that gets missed. A lit mirror needs a power feed landing inside its own footprint, which means a box or a cable stub set before the wall is tiled. Lux Glass agrees that position with your electrician, because a feed 2 inches outside the panel shows as a cord.

What does the LED driver do?

It steps line voltage down. LED strip runs on low voltage direct current, commonly 12 V or 24 V, so a driver sits between the mains and the mirror. It needs ventilation and access, not a sealed cavity. Lux Glass plans where that driver lives before the mirror is made.

Can the size change once the LEDs are fitted?

No. The silvering is sandblasted and the strip is bonded in place, so the panel is finished at that point. A plain mirror can still have its polished edge eased on site; a lit one cannot. Lux Glass works from a site measurement across the GTA for exactly this reason.

What light colour suits a vanity?

Around 4000 K, with a colour rendering index of 90 or better. Warm 2700 K light flatters a room but shifts skin tone, which matters if the mirror is used for makeup or shaving. Lux Glass asks which job the mirror does before specifying the strip.

Is the glass in an LED mirror tempered?

No. Mirror is annealed glass, because tempering leaves a roll distortion that shows as a wavy reflection once the sheet is silvered, and glass of 5 mm or less is never tempered. Lux Glass supplies annealed mirror with a safety backing film on GTA orders.

Which mirror backing belongs in a bathroom?

Copper-free, and the lit version makes that choice tighter. Removing silvering for a front-lit band leaves the backing locally thinner, so any copper layer there has less protecting it from steam. Copper-free mirror carries a passivation layer instead. Lux Glass specifies copper-free glass on GTA bathroom orders.

How thick should the glass be?

5 mm or 6 mm for most lit mirrors. The panel stands off the wall rather than bedding flat on mastic, so it has to hold itself straight across the span, and 4 mm flexes enough to bend the reflection. Lux Glass sets thickness by panel size in the GTA.

What is a demister pad?

A heated film bonded to the back of the mirror. It holds the glass about 5 to 10 degrees above room temperature, so condensation never forms on that patch while the shower runs. Most pads draw 20 W to 60 W by size. Lux Glass fits demister pads on GTA mirror orders.

Does the light need a moisture rating?

Yes, near a shower or tub. Fittings carry an IP number, and IP44 is the usual benchmark for a mirror light in a bathroom, meaning it tolerates splashing from any direction. Your electrician confirms what the room needs. Lux Glass specifies rated strip and drivers on GTA mirror work.

How is a lit mirror switched?

Three common ways: a touch pad on the glass face, a sensor that reads a hand passing, or an ordinary wall switch. The touch pad usually carries dimming and colour change with it. Lux Glass settles the control type before fabrication, since the pad position is cut into the backing.

Can the LED be replaced later?

The strip cannot, practically speaking, because it is bonded behind the glass. The driver can, and on a 12 V or 24 V system it is the part that fails first, so it should sit where a hand reaches it rather than buried behind tile. Lux Glass leaves driver access on GTA orders.

How far off the wall does a backlit mirror sit?

Far enough for the light to spread. A spacer frame or standoff set holds the panel roughly 1 inch to 2 inches clear, and that gap is what turns a strip into a halo. Too tight and the separate LEDs read as hot spots. Lux Glass builds the spacer into GTA backlit mirrors.

Backlit and LED mirrors across Toronto and the GTA

Lux Glass works out of Oakville and covers Toronto and the surrounding region, including Mississauga, Etobicoke, Burlington and Milton. The lit mirror question is usually an electrical one before it is a glass one. Downtown Toronto condo bathrooms rarely have a spare feed behind the vanity, so the mirror size follows wherever the existing box sits. Older Oakville and Burlington houses are being opened up anyway during a renovation, which is the moment to move the feed. Newer Milton builds often have a box roughly centred already, and a front-lit panel drops onto it.
