Closet and Door Mirrors: Sizes and Safety Backing

A mirrored closet door is a door first and a mirror second. The glass is annealed and silvered, never tempered, so the safety requirement is met by a film bonded to the back rather than by heat treating. Size follows the opening, and weight decides what the door and its hinges can carry.

What size are mirrored closet doors?

Sliding pairs fit three standard openings: 48 inches as two 24 inch panels, 60 inches as two 30 inch panels, and 72 inches as two 36 inch panels. Height is 80 inches, and the track needs 1.5 to 2 inches of headroom above the opening. Lux Glass measures closet openings across the GTA.

What is safety backing on a mirror?

A tough polymer film bonded across the back of the silvered sheet. The glass underneath is annealed, so without the film a break comes down as loose shards; with it, the fragments stay stuck to the backing. Film is supplied to a Category I or Category II rating. Lux Glass specifies backed mirror for every GTA closet door.

Does a closet door mirror have to be safety glass?

Glass in a door sits in a location subject to human impact, and the Ontario Building Code points door glazing at CAN/CGSB-12.1, Tempered or Laminated Safety Glass. A mirror cannot be tempered, so the safety backing carries that duty. Lux Glass supplies backed mirror on GTA door work.

Can a mirror be tempered?

Not after it is silvered. Tempering runs the glass through a furnace, which would destroy the silver coating, so it has to happen before coating. Tempered mirror also carries roller distortion that shows in the reflection. Lux Glass keeps mirror annealed and backed on every GTA job.

How thick should a closet door mirror be?

6 mm, which is a quarter inch, for any panel running the height of a door. 4 mm suits a small panel held in a frame on all four sides. Thinner glass flexes over a long span and bends the reflection. Lux Glass cuts closet mirror to 6 mm across the GTA.

How much does a closet door mirror weigh?

Mirror runs about 15 kg for every square metre in 6 mm, so a 24 by 80 inch panel lands near 41 pounds and a 30 by 80 near 51. That weight is why a sliding panel hangs on a track rather than on the door skin. Lux Glass works the weight out before cutting GTA mirror.

Can you mount a mirror on a hollow core door?

Only a light one. A hollow core door weighs 25 to 45 pounds itself and the hinges take the added load, so the mirror is best kept near 6 to 7 kg. A 16 by 60 inch sheet in 4 mm sits at about 14 pounds. Lux Glass sizes door mirrors to that ceiling in the GTA.

What size mirror fits on the back of a door?

Narrower than the door by at least an inch on each side. A standard interior door is 30 by 80 inches and 1-3/8 inches thick, and the mirror has to clear the hinge side and the stop. Lux Glass cuts door mirrors to the measured leaf across the GTA.

How are bifold mirror doors different from sliding?

Bifold panels fold out of the opening instead of passing each other, so both halves of the closet open at once. Panels run about 77-3/4 inches tall to clear the track and pivot, against 80 inches for a sliding pair. Lux Glass supplies mirror for both in the GTA.

What edge finish does a closet mirror need?

A flat polish where the edge is covered by a frame or a channel, and a polished or bevelled edge wherever the glass is seen. A raw cut edge chips and is sharp to handle. Edges are worked before the backing goes on. Lux Glass polishes every exposed mirror edge in the GTA.

Can a closet mirror be cut to a custom size?

Yes, because mirror stays annealed, so it can be cut to an opening that is not a catalogue size. Older Toronto closets are rarely square, and a panel cut to the measured opening beats a 60 inch catalogue panel forced into a 58 inch gap. Lux Glass cuts to measured sizes in the GTA.

What makes a mirrored closet door fail?

Three things: a track set without the 1.5 to 2 inches of headroom it needs, glass weight carried by the door skin rather than the frame, and a panel bedded on adhesive with no mechanical hold. The first two bind, the third drops. Lux Glass checks all three on GTA closets.

Closet and door mirrors across Toronto and the GTA

Lux Glass works out of Oakville and covers Toronto and the surrounding region, including Mississauga, Etobicoke, Burlington and Milton. Closet openings follow the age of the house more than the size of it. Older Toronto houses in the Annex, Leslieville and High Park were built with reach-in closets that are narrower than any catalogue width and rarely square, so the mirror gets cut to the measured opening. Downtown condo units run to sliding mirrored walls on a single track, where the panel height is set by a dropped ceiling rather than by the door. Newer builds in Milton and Mississauga give the standard 48, 60 and 72 inch openings, which keeps the panel sizes predictable. Oakville and Burlington walk-in closets more often take a mirror on the swing door itself, and that is where weight at the hinges decides the thickness.
